Pharmacy Numbers 2019

The gap between male and female pharmacist numbers continues to grow, as does the overall number of pharmacists registered in Australia.  The Pharmacy Board has released its latest figures regarding the register of practitioners, providing a snapshot of the sector.

A total of 31,565 pharmacists are now registered in Australia – up a little from 31,212 in the September 2018 quarter.

As always, the greatest proportion of these pharmacists principally practice in NSW (30.18%) and Victoria (25.46%), with 19.76% in Queensland, down to 1.93% in the ACT and 0.80% in the Northern Territory. Two per cent listed no principal place of practice.

Fewer pharmacists were aged under 25 in the December 2018 quarter – 1,808 compared to 1,853 in September.

The highest proportion remained in the 30-34-year-old age bracket (6,024 pharmacists) and the 25-29-year-old group (6,024). Those in the 35-39-year-old group grew a little over the quarter, from 4,886 to 5,012.

And the feminisation of the profession continues, with 19,715 female pharmacists registered, up from 19,475 in the September quarter; 11,850 men are now registered, also a little up from 11,737.

This means 62.5% of Australia’s pharmacists are now female.
