Magnesium Deficiency Common in Menopause

Magnesium deficiency is common in menopausal women reveals new research findings adding weight to existing evidence and highlighting the importance of controlling and monitoring this important nutrient, writes Dr Ruth Hadfield PhD. The research, conducted at the University of Granada, Spain, included 78 healthy postmenopausal women and found 23% had significantly low plasma levels of magnesium and 72% had low erythrocyte magnesium levels.  Furthermore, in 36% of post-menopausal women, magnesium intake was insufficient (1).

It is well established that adequate magnesium levels are crucial for utilisation of calcium and vitamin D essential for bone maintenance. But, checking magnesium levels in postmenopausal women is often overlooked when assessing their vitamin D and calcium status.
